You may have heard that the NHS cervical screening (smear test) programme has changed — here’s what you need to know:

🔹 If you're aged 25 to 49 and your last cervical screening test was normal, you'll now be invited every 5 years instead of every 3.
🔹 This change only applies if your last result showed no high-risk HPV (the virus that can cause cervical cancer).
🔹 If HPV is found or if you’ve had previous abnormal results, you’ll still be monitored more closely, with screening or follow-up as needed.

👉 Why the change?
This update is based on strong scientific evidence showing that HPV testing is more accurate at detecting risk early — and if no high-risk HPV is present, your risk of developing cervical cancer in the next few years is extremely low.

✅ Rest assured, this change means screening is just as safe, more efficient, and backed by the latest research.

If you’re due for screening, you’ll still receive your invitation as usual — and we strongly encourage you to attend.

If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to contact the practice — we’re here to help.
